As a beginning stamp collector, the first thing you must do is gather some STAMPS! There are lots of places where you can get stamps. |
Here are some good sources:
Your Mailbox - save stamps from envelopes, packages, and postcards that come to your house. (Learn how to soak stamps from envelopes.)
Local Post Office - where you can purchase new stamps.
Friends, relatives, and local businesses - ask them to save the stamps from their mail for you.
Pen Pals - Find a pen pal (perhaps friends or relatives) so that you can send each other letters with cool stamps.
Stamp Dealers - are a great source for older stamps and often offer inexpensive packages containing many different stamps from all over the world. To find a Stamp Dealer in your area, look in your yellow pages or visit the on-line APS Dealer Directory where you can search in your state or city.
Local Stamp Clubs - Join a local stamp club where you can trade with members or ask for help to get you started. You may
be able to find a club in your area by using our geographical listing
of APS Stamp Clubs.
Youth Stamp Clubs - there are some youth stamp clubs that are affiliated with the APS through our All Star Stamp Cub program. Contact Janet Houser to find the club near you.
Stamp Shows - At stamp shows you will not only find stamps but also get to meet other collectors. Use the APS Show Calendar, where you search for a show in your area.
The APS - APS' Online StampStore and our Sales by Mail are excellent sources for APS members to buy stamps. In both cases, APS members are selling their own stamps to other members.
